El pasado mes de abril murió un hombre de 37 años llamado Francisco Guzmán. A medida que envejezco, más me sorprende la vida, más me maravilla su imprevisibilidad, su carácter paradójico, la magia inconcebible que a veces derrocha. Francisco Guzmán tenía una licenciatura en Física y otra en Humanidades y trabajaba como becario investigador en el Instituto de Filosofía del CSIC. Además era diverso funcional: nació con parálisis cerebral y para moverse necesitaba una silla de ruedas. Brillante teórico, fue un importante activista en el Movimiento de Vida Independiente de España, a través del foro Vida independiente y divertad (divertad es la unión entre diversidad y libertad). Entre otras cosas, fue promotor de un proyecto de asistencia personal llamado Programa de Vida Independiente; la Comunidad de Madrid dispone de este programa desde 2006 y atiende a 58 personas con diversidad funcional física, mayores de edad y con una vida activa de estudio o trabajo. En vez de recluirlos para siempre en residencias que, por muy bien atendidas que estén, terminan siendo cárceles, el programa ofrece asistencia personal los 365 días al año para poder moverse, salir, entrar, trabajar, pasear y, en suma, vivir una vida digna de ser llamada así. Es una idea sencilla y magnífica y sale más barata que las residencias. Al principio, Francisco contó con 10 horas al día de asistencia personal, que luego fueron reducidas a siete horas por la crisis. Un tiempo de libertad que él sabía emplear muy bien.

No le conocí personalmente y lo lamento. He sabido de él a través de otro diverso funcional, el escritor y amigo José Antonio Fortuny. Él me envió el documento que Francisco había dejado a modo de mensaje final, un texto titulado Panegírico que me estalló en la cabeza. Sus palabras están entre las más hermosas que jamás he leído. Entre las más sabias. Más tiernas. Más valientes. Inmensas palabras sanadoras que deberían ser oídas por todo el mundo, porque curan de la tristeza del vivir. Hay personas que, teniéndolo todo en apariencia, no son capaces de sobrellevar el peso de la existencia y se suicidan o se hunden en la droga. Francisco, en cambio, parecía carecer hasta de lo más básico, como si el azar se hubiera ensañado con él. Y, sin embargo, su amor a la vida nos emborracha. Pero prefiero callar, porque su voz es mucho más poderosa que la mía. Por razones de espacio, aquí sólo reproduzco parte de su texto. Si googleas Panegírico minusval 2000 podrás leerlo todo. Sin embargo, he practicado relaciones sexuales plenas, más de lo que la mayoría probablemente habría imaginado, y mucho, mucho menos de lo que me hubiera gustado en la vida. No lo comentaba casi nunca para evitar desaprobaciones inútiles e innecesarias. Pero en esta lista de cosas por las que mi vida ha merecido la pena el sexo no podía faltar.
Me he asomado a los misterios del cosmos. Aprendí que el universo es muy grande, y las posibilidades, infinitas, así que no desesperéis. Tuve la gran fortuna de vivir como lo hice precisamente porque me permitieron aceptarme y vivir tal cual era. (…) Podéis felicitar a mis padres si os place, sin duda se lo merecen, sin embargo, no olvidéis que no deberían haber sido los únicos soportes durante la mayor parte de mi vida. Las administraciones públicas deben garantizar la no discriminación, la igualdad y la libertad de todos. (…) Me voy con el buen gusto de haber experimentado la auténtica independencia.
Lamento al fin dejaros, ahora que empezaba a dejar de tener miedo. Que me desembarazaba de cautelas y obligaciones. Que me permitía, a veces, presentarme ante quien fuera tal cual soy, sin ostentosas demostraciones de paciencia o resistencia, y sin preocuparme demasiado por el futuro. Di pocos pasos por ese camino, me habría gustado saber adónde me habría conducido, seguramente a un lugar bonito y tranquilo de mi conciencia, un lugar que todos deberíamos tener y compartir.
