Hiperglucemia
Para mucha gente con diabetes, comer demasiado, sobre todo muchos carbohidratos y azúcar, los hace sentir muy cansados después de las comidas. El cansancio y la falta de energía son síntomas comunes de la hiperglucemia o los niveles elevados de azúcar. Quizás tengas mucha azúcar circulando en la sangre, pero tu insulina está deficiente o no funciona de forma efectiva para hacer que el azúcar llegue a las células. Si las células no reciben azúcar, que es su principal fuente de energía, se sienten cansadas y lo mismo te ocurre a ti. La hiperglucemia también puede estar acompañada, aunque no siempre, por un incremento de la sed y las ganas frecuentes de orinar.
Hipoglucemia
La hipoglucemia o niveles bajos de azúcar puede ser otra de las causas de la somnolencia luego de comer. La hipoglucemia puede producirse si has ingerido demasiada insulina o medicamentos para la diabetes para la cantidad de carbohidratos que comiste, o bien, si consumiste carbohidratos de digestión rápida que hicieron que tus niveles de glucosa se elevaran considerablemente y luego descendieran en el transcurso de una a dos horas. Si tus niveles de glucosa disminuyen por debajo de los 70 mg/dL, se considera un nivel bajo de azúcar y necesitas tratarlo de forma inmediata ya sea con tres o cuatro tabletas de glucosa, 1/2 taza de una bebida suave común, 1/2 taza de jugo de frutas o 1 cucharada de azúcar o miel. Si tus niveles de glucosa están bajos, puede que te sientas hambriento, tembloroso, mareado, débil, confundido e irritable.

Nivel óptimo de glucosa
Con la diabetes es importante ajustar tu plan de tratamiento que incluye la dieta, el estilo de vida y los medicamentos para mantener los niveles de azúcar dentro de los valores aceptables. Manejar tus niveles de glucosa te ayuda a prevenir el daño asociado a la diabetes incontrolada. Tus niveles de glucosa deberían rondar entre los 70 y 130 mg/dL antes de comer y debajo de los 180 mg/dL dos horas luego del comienzo de la comida. La mejor forma de asegurarte que tu diabetes esté bajo control es monitoreando tus niveles de azúcar. Controla tus niveles de glucosa cuando sientas sueño para determinar si la somnolencia se debe a la hiperglucemia o hipoglucemia.
Consumo de carbohidratos
Para la mayoría de la gente con diabetes, la somnolencia luego de las comidas se debe a los altos niveles de glucosa por el consumo excesivo de carbohidratos. Los carbohidratos son fundamentales para optimizar tus niveles de azúcar y energía. Este nutriente está presente en los granos, legumbres, frutas, leche, yogur, jugos, bebidas dulces y postres. Lleva un registro de tu consumo de carbohidratos en cada comida para comprender mejor la relación entre lo que comes, tus niveles de glucosa y cómo te sientes.
