Cuando hablamos de mantener vivo el niño interior, nos referimos a que el hombre no pierda de vista aquellas virtudes propias de la infancia que, con el transcurso de la vida, se van dejando de lado. Esas cualidades se encuentran en su fuero más profundo y el hombre adulto tiene la capacidad de desarrollarlas para vivir plenamente, superando los obstáculos e intentando concretar ese potencial que le permitirá ser más feliz. Aquí se enumeran aquellas cualidades propias de la niñez que es importante cuidar y por las que es positivo mantener vivo al niño que todos llevamos dentro.
Capacidad de asombro
Gracias a la capacidad de asombro, los niños van descubriendo el mundo que los rodea. Su curiosidad los motiva a aprender cosas nuevas todos los días y viven cada revelación como sorprendente. A medida que las personas crecen, van madurando y su capacidad de asombro disminuye. El mundo deja de sorprenderlos con tanta fuerza, y la mayoría de las cuestiones del día a día se van normalizando y no llaman su atención. En los tiempos que corren, con la aceleración con que el hombre se maneja, el estrés y la sobrestimulación externa muchas veces juegan en contra a la hora de asombrarse por motus propio. Por eso debe recurrir constantemente a formas de entretenimiento que lo sorprendan por fuera de su interior.
Inocencia
Si hay algo en lo que nadie puede discrepar es en la inocencia de los niños. Su inmadurez, su corta vivencia, sus pocas experiencias tanto buenas como malas le permiten manejarse de manera natural, confiando en quienes lo rodean y sobre todo: pensando bien de los demás. El hombre maduro tiene la capacidad y el defecto de pensar mal de los demás por anticipado, aún sin conocer demasiado a la otra persona. Tal es así que muchos hombres suelen decir “Piensa mal y acertarás”, creyéndose más inteligentes que el resto. Los niños nunca piensan mal de los demás y esa inocencia se va perdiendo al crecer y al despertarse la malicia que muchas veces nos servirá para estar más despiertos, pero nos quitará la inocencia y la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia sin juzgar los resultados previamente.
Capacidad de olvido y perdón
La falta de rencor es una de aquellas materias que los hombres siempre tendrán pendientes si de aprender de los niños se trata. Un sentimiento que no puede ayudar en nada a quien lo experimenta y que por el contrario lo arraiga a una experiencia del pasado no resuelta. Si a un niño lo lastiman, olvida inmediatamente lo que aquella persona le hizo y enseguida está jugando nuevamente con ella. El hombre adulto se queda en el dolor mucho tiempo, lo muerde, se retuerce, sufre y no saca nada positivo de allí. Incluso cuando cree perdonar, no logra olvidar, porque lo que no ha perdonado del todo. ¿Cuántas veces hemos oído la frase “Yo perdono pero no olvido” como si fuera una declaración de la cual presumir y estar orgulloso?
Sin prejuicios
El niño no tiene preconceptos instalados en su mente. No juzga previamente antes de conocer a los demás. No cree en bandos, razas, grupos de gente diferentes a él mismo, y las diferencias físicas que estén a la vista las mencionarán de frente y sin tapujos, pero sin adjudicarle a esas diferencias ningún otro significado relacionado a la personalidad del otro. Esta carencia de prejuicios que caracteriza a los niños se debe a su baja contaminación social. La experiencia de vida en sociedad va transformando esas mentes inocentes sin conceptos previos y con el transcurso de la vida del hombre, se van agregando un montón de significados asociados a las demás personas, corrompiendo esa ingenuidad inicial.
Sinceridad
Los niños tienen la capacidad de ser genuinos. Su honestidad natural los hace directos al expresarse, y ser auténticos para lo que sea que quieran decir, con una simpleza admirable. Los chicos no saben mentir realmente, no son hipócritas, ni conocen de simulación. Nunca mienten para hacer daño a alguien o para liberarse conscientemente de una responsabilidad. Cuando mienten son tan evidentes que causan ternura, porque su fantasía para inventar es infinita. A las personas adultas les cuesta ser totalmente reales, lo cual es una pena porque la sinceridad es el cimiento para muchos otros principios valiosos como la confianza y el respeto.
Espontaneidad
Los niños son naturales, no tienen barreras para expresarse y lo hacen con despojo total. No tienen miedo al ridículo y su espontaneidad innata es envidiable para los adultos. No conocen de falsedad, porque además no tienen conciencia del compromiso y las responsabilidades sociales. A medida que uno crece, va perdiendo esa naturalidad y se vuelve mucho más medido a la hora de expresarse y cuidadoso al elegir cada palabra, cada gesto y movimiento en la comunicación. Muchas veces eso puede sugerir una madurez positiva, pero otras se está perdiendo la espontaneidad natural que hace a cada persona diferente a las demás.
Confianza
Los niños creen en lo que se les dice y mágicamente se apropian de lo que oyeron sin analizarlo más tiempo. Tienen plena confianza en lo que se les transmite y nunca lo ponen en duda. Muchos padres primerizos se divierten haciéndole creer a sus hijos explicaciones que sonarían ridículas a oídos mayores y se asombran de la capacidad de credibilidad con la que cuentan antes sus menores. El adulto pierde por completo esa capacidad de confiar sin más y necesita poner en tela de juicio todo lo que ve y escucha antes de hacerlo propio. Parte de la madurez radica en dicha capacidad de análisis, pero que lamentablemente viene aparejada de la desconfianza de todo lo que nos rodea.
Entusiasmo
Si hay algo que diferencia a los niños de los adultos son las ganas levantarse por la mañana. Los niños están ansiosos por comenzar cada día, por eso suelen despertarse tan temprano y enseguida pueden saltar de la cama y comenzar a moverse y a hablar sin parar. El adulto desearía poder levantarse tarde, se despierta deseando dormir más. Por supuesto, los años no vienen solos y existe además un desgaste físico que justifica esta actitud, una diferencia de cansancio entre un mayor y menor. Pero hay además una diferencia de espíritu: el niño disfruta de iniciar cada día por el solo entusiasmo de vivir simplemente. El adulto despotrica por tener que madrugar y comenzar otro día y olvida la el placer y la gracia que significa vivir un día más de vida.
Capacidad innata de entretenimiento
Todo niño tiene la capacidad de jugar con lo que sea, en cualquier momento y en cualquier lugar. Tiene la facilidad de hacer de una caja de cartón o de la simple capacidad de correr la aventura más increíble. Los chicos se divierten con lo más simple porque sencillamente encierran en sí mismos la capacidad de entretenerse sin requerir más. En contraposición, el adulto necesita buscar continuamente estimulación externa que lo distraiga: la televisión, la computadora, los vicios, incluso el trabajo.
Imaginación
El niño tiene la capacidad de crear un mundo fantástico alrededor suyo y ver las maravillas más inusitadas donde un adulto no ve nada más que el mundo real. Un jardín puede ser la selva más peligrosa y el espacio debajo de una mesa, el refugio más sagrado. Su creatividad no tiene límites, que recién comienzan a llegar al crecer. Con el paso del tiempo, la mente va incorporando estructuras mentales que comienzan a levantar muros a esa imaginación sin fronteras que se tenía en la infancia. Una buena manera de conservar parte de esa fantasía en la adultez es desarrollando alguna de las formas del arte.
