Científicos españoles han descubierto que el consumo de melatonina ayuda a regular el aumento de peso porque estimula la aparición de “grasa beige”, un tipo de células grasas que quema las calorías en lugar de almacenarlas. Esta sustancia está presente de forma natural en nuestro cuerpo pero también podemos obtenerla a través del consumo de alimentos como la mostaza, las almendras o las cerezas.
El grupo de investigadores, liderado por la Universidad de Granada (España), ha desvelado por primera vez las causas del beneficio metabólico atribuido a esta sustancia inherente a nuestro organismo. La melatonina es una hormona natural que segrega el cuerpo humano y que alcanza sus niveles más altos durante la noche (ante la falta de luz). Cumple una función de inducción al sueño fundamental para nuestro reloj biológico.
A través de la experimentación con ratas obesas diabéticas, los científicos detectaron que el consumo crónico de melatonina induce la aparición de “grasa beige”, un tipo de grasa que, a diferencia del tejido adiposo blanco, no almacena calorías y ayuda a regular el peso corporal. Los niveles de esta “grasa buena” no sólo se vieron incrementados en las ratas obesas, sino también en los animales delgados que se usaron como grupo control.
La melatonina se encuentra en pequeñas cantidades en algunas frutas y verduras como la mostaza, las Bayas del Goji, las almendras y pipas de girasol, el cardamomo, el hinojo, el cilantro y las cerezas. Dormir a oscuras y consumir todos estos alimentos podría ayudar a controlar el peso y a prevenir las enfermedades cardiovasculares asociadas a la obesidad y la diabetes.
