Los niños que reciben más cariño durante su etapa escolar desarrollan un hipocampo más grande y tienen menos síntomas de depresión. Estas son las conclusiones de un estudio publicado en Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition y que confirma lo que intuitivamente todos sabemos: no hay nada como el «amor de madre».
Aunque muchos trabajos han demostrado las consecuencias de crecer en un ambiente cariñoso sobre el éxito escolar y otros factores psicosociales, este es el primero que muestra el efecto directo sobre el cerebro. Concretamente, los investigadores observaron que los niños criados con afecto desarrollaban un hipocampo casi diez veces mayor que los que no habían tenido tanta suerte. Este órgano se relaciona con procesos de memoria y aprendizaje, así como con mecanismos de respuesta al estrés, por lo que es importante su correcto desarrollo a edades tempranas.
«El estudio tiene una gran implicación sobre la salud pública y sugiere que debemos de prestar más atención a la forma en la que los padres crían a sus hijos» indican los autores. Tanto en la escuela como en su ambiente familiar es importante el cariño alrededor de los pequeños. «Como sociedad, debemos hacer lo que podamos para fomentar estas habilidades ya que está claro que los cuidados paternos tienen un impacto muy grande en el desarrollo posterior de los niños», apuntan los investigadores.
