Un estudio británico llevado a cabo en el University College de Londres ha demostrado que hacen falta 66 días para que se cree un hábito y pueda mantenerse durante años. Eso significa que si durante ese número de días «repites algo cada día en la misma situación, se convierte en una reacción automática ante dicha situación», explica Jane Wardle, coautora del estudio que se publicaba en la revistaEuropean Journal of Social Psychology. A partir de ese momento el hábito adquiere cierto automatismo, y no hace falta voluntad, ni tan siquiera pensar en ello intencionadamente, para poder repetir dicho comportamiento.
Los sujetos del experimento probaron que es válido tanto para hábitos saludables relacionados con la alimentación como con la rutina de practicar ejercicio a diario, por ejemplo 15 minutos de carrera antes de la cena. Por término medio, los hábitos relacionados con el ejercicio físico tardaban más en adquirirse de manera firma que, por ejemplo, incorporar la costumbre de comer una pieza de fruta cada día.
