Si eres de los que tiemblan cada vez que tienes que ir a hacerte un análisis de sangre, estás de enhorabuena. Un equipo de investigadores del MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) ha desarrollado un sistema que permite inyectar una gran variedad de fármacos a través de la piel sin necesidad de emplear agujas. El trabajo se publica en la revista Medical Engineering & Physics y sus creadores están haciendo pruebas para adaptarlo a los diferentes tipos de piel.
El mecanismo se basa en las fuerzas de Lorentz, que son aquellas que se ejercen por el campo magnético al recibir una partícula cargada o una corriente eléctrica. Consta de un imán muy pequeño y potente rodeado por una bobina de alambre unida al émbolo de una cápsula que contiene los fármacos a inyectar. Cuando se aplica una corriente eléctrica, esta interacciona con el campo magnético y produce una fuerza tal que empuja el pistón, permitiendo que la cápsula se abra e inyecte su contenido a gran velocidad a través de la piel.
Adaptado a cada tipo de piel
Este sistema supone un avance frente a otras formas de inyectar sustancias sin agujas. Por ejemplo, los parches empleados para dejar de fumar son capaces de suministrar los fármacos, pero el tamaño de las sustancias no puede superar al de los poros de la piel, ya que pasan a través de ellos. El nuevo mecanismo no tiene restricciones de tamaño y, además, la corriente aplicada se puede modular para adaptarse tanto a la velocidad de inyección deseada, como a las características propias de cada piel. «No es lo mismo inyectar una vacuna a través de la piel de un bebé que hacerlo en la mía, obviamente se necesita mayor presión en mi caso», explica Catherine Hogan, una de las autoras.
Además, los investigadores están trabajando en un sistema que incorpore vibración con la finalidad de poder disolver polvos en agua, un avance que tendría usos muy útiles. Por ejemplo, uno de los principales problemas de la aplicación de vacunas en países en desarrollo es su conservación, ya que estas se tienen que mantener en frío. Si se suministraran en forma de polvos se eliminaría este problema.
Aunque el sistema aún se encuentra en pruebas, seguro que a partir de ahora las personas con pavor a las agujas ya podrán respirar más tranquilas.
