¿Por qué está siendo tan difícil para las comunidades acoger a niños(as), jóvenes y adultos con Síndrome de Down y hacer los ajustes que se necesitan para lograr que ellos participen, pertenezcan, permanezcan y sean valorados como miembros que contribuyen a formular una sociedad cimentada en la diversidad?
¿Es la familia una comunidad que acoge y valora a todos sus miembros?
¿Es la escuela un lugar donde todos podemos aprender?
¿Es la ciudad un espacio accesible para todos?
Cuántas preguntas cuyas respuestas están siendo tan evasivas, inciertas y difíciles de responder. Pero más aún ¿Somos las personas amables entre nosotros, creemos que TODOS somos valiosos y tenemos una contribución que ofrecer? ¿Dónde se manifiestan los hechos que encierran palabras como convivencia, tolerancia, solidaridad, equidad, corresponsabilidad por mencionar solo algunos?
Qué difícil me está resultando entender que cualquier cambio que se proponga es un proceso.
He buscado qué quiere decir «Proceso» y encuentro que son los cambios graduales que deben producirse en una comunidad para lograr su transformación hacia nuevos paradigmas, nuevas visiones, nuevas ideas y fundamentalmente hacia una mirada diferente a algo que no hemos visto o nunca nos ha interesado.
Se preguntarán a qué viene toda esta reflexión, y tiene que ver con acontecimientos de los últimos meses nuevamente que nuevamente vuelven a mostrar que el lograr el cambio de toda una sociedad a la mirada que dé a las personas con deficienci cognitiva va a tomar muchos más años de los que creíamos y quisiéramos.
Cuando ya hemos logrado un recorrido en este largo y complejo camino, aparecen nuevos participantes cuyas ideas, mitos y creencias son idénticos a los que nos enfrentamos hace 14 años, pero que en el hoy somos menos benevolentes en justificar cuando tanto se está publicando y diciendo en diferentes espacios nacionales e internacionales. ¿Será cansancio o me estaré volviendo poco tolerante?
Creo que el gran reto está en identificar donde fija cada uno su mirada, ¿qué ven en la persona con Síndrome de Down? ¿Es porque nunca han tenido la oportunidad de ver y conocer algo diferente? ¿Es porque no quieren ver, ni oír algo diferente? ¿es porque cambiar les produce temor? ¿Es porque no saben como cambiar o no quieren cambiar?
Solo cuando logremos estas respuestas podemos nuevamente tomar energía y planear nuevas estrategias en donde busquemos esa sensibilización que la comunidad necesita hacia las personas con Síndrome de Down y provoquemos un cambio de «ACTITUD», allí donde la inteligencia negocia con los sentimientos, hacia las personas con deficiencia cognitiva, que estaremos realmente produciendo efectos que permanezcan más en el tiempo y sean de real beneficio para muchos hoy y tantos otros mañana.
