Los padres de recién nacidos con parálisis cerebral pueden ahora consultar gratuitamente un manual que les ayudará a enfrentarse a esta situación con la experiencia de los profesionales y de todos aquellos padres que ya la han vivido.
La parálisis cerebral infantil (PCI) normalmente es diagnosticada cuando el bebé es aún muy pequeño. Por más que los médicos intenten explicar a los padres sobre la enfermedad, siempre es difícil para la familia implicada, entender y aceptar realmente lo que está ocurriendo. La espera de un hijo siempre llena a los padres de ilusión y de expectativas, que suelen quedar estacionadas cuando surge algún problema. Así ocurre con los padres de un bebé con PC. Cada año, nacen aproximadamente unos 1.500 bebés con PC. Se presenta en casi 3 personas por cada mil nacidos. Y Ya son 120 mil las personas con parálisis infantil en España. Pese a los avances en prevención, los casos siguen aumentando, en parte, según los especialistas, por el nacimiento de niños prematuros, un factor de riesgo de esta discapacidad.
Con un lenguaje sencillo y positivo, la guía para padres primerizos ofrece información desde los primeros días del bebé, el momento de la noticia, hasta la escolarización del niño. En ella, los padres encontrarán respuestas a sus innúmeras dudas sobre cómo deben estimular a su bebé, a qué especialistas deben acudir, cómo es el tratamiento, qué tipo de parálisis es la que tiene su hijo, además de cosas tan sencillas como el saber comunicarse o jugar con él, alimentarlo y vestirlo. La guía ha sido elaborada por la Confederación ASACE y presentada por la Fundación ONCE de Madrid. La parálisis cerebral es la causa más frecuente dediscapacidad que se produce en la infancia y que se extiende hasta la edad adulta. Ocurre por una lesión cerebral durante el embarazo, el parto, o en los primeros años de vida del bebé. La PC afecta a los movimientos, a la fuerza muscular, la coordinación y el equilibrio del bebé. Además, el bebé suele presentar problemas asociados como trastornos cognitivos, sensoriales y del lenguaje. La finalidad del manual es orientar a los padres para que ellos decidan qué es lo mejor para ellos, sin olvidarse de que no son ellos los únicos con un hijo con parálisis cerebral.
