Los síntomas más obvios que presentan los niños con dislexia incluyen las dificultades en aprender y usar el lenguaje, pero no todos los niños que tienen estos problemas son disléxicos.
Con frecuencia estas dificultades se notan en el primer año de primaria, cuando los niños están aprendiendo a leer, pero lo pueden trasladar a sus actividades diarias.
De acuerdo a Barbara Young, Una educadora de Toronto y fundadora del método de enseñanza Arrowsmith, un niño con dislexia puede, dependiendo del grado de la deficiencia de aprendizaje, presentar uno, algunos o muchos de los síntomas que abajo se presentan.
La clave no está en el número de síntomas, insiste Young, sino en si (y hasta qué grado) interfieren con el funcionamiento de tu hijo. Lee la siguiente lista para saber si tu hijo necesita hacer pruebas para saber si tiene dislexia.
Habla
Mi hijo:
Tiene problemas para relacionar una letra a su sonido.
Tiende a divagar cuando habla y deja fuera pedazos de información que son necesarios para que el oyente entienda de lo que se le está hablando.
Organizar el lenguaje escrito y oral
Tiene dificultades para traducir sus pensamientos al proceso de escritura. Él/ella sabe qué quiere decir pero tiene problemas al pasarlo al papel con las palabras adecuadas y con la gramática correcta.
Deletrear
Escribe la misma palabra de diferentes maneras en la misma página.
Leer
Tiene una memoria visual pobre para las palabras que ha aprendido con anterioridad. Por ejemplo, no reconoce la palabra ‘Casa’, aun cuando la ha visto en repetidas ocasiones.
Tiende a leer mal las palabras, por ejemplo, ‘Raza’ por ‘Taza’; ‘Siesta’ por ‘Fiesta’.
Escritura
Tiene que concentrarse en el proceso de escritura y, como resultado, se concentra menos en el contenido de lo que escribe,
Inversión de letras
Invierte las letras cuando escribe
Esto es parte del desarrollo y completamente normal hasta cierta edad. De acuerdo a Young, sólo hay problema si tu hijo continúa haciéndolo después del 3er año (en promedio).
Si te preocupa si tu hijo tiene alguna deficiencia de aprendizaje como la dislexia, habla con su maestro. Las escuelas se encuentran generalmente bien equipadas para tratar con estos problemas y pueden ofrecerte materiales y guiarte para que encuentres la ayuda necesaria.
