Algunas cosas que debes recordar…
– Ofrece tu ayuda, pero no lo hagas en forma precipitada. Pregunta primero si lo desea y cómo puedes hacerlo.
– Recuerda, sólo porque una persona utiliza silla de ruedas, no significa que esté enformo. Muchas personas que utilizan silla de ruedas están saludables y fuertes.
– Cuando estés hablando con alguien que utilice silla de ruedas, colócate a la altura de sus ojos. Por ejemplo, sentándote.
– No te preocupes por decir «Mira», «Oye», «Apúrate» cuando hables con amigos con discapacidad. No resulta necesariamente ofensivo.
– Puedes pedirle a una persona con dificultades de lenguaje repetir lo que dijeron si no comprendiste.
– Si un intérprete está ayudándote a comunicarte con una persona sorda, asegúrate de dirigirte a la persona sorda y no al intérprete.
– No alces la voz cuando hables con una persona ciega. Ellos no tienen problemas para escuchar.
– Nunca acaricies o juegues con un perro guía. No puedes distraerlos del trabajo que están desempeñando.
– Invita a tus amigos con discapacidad a pasar la noche en tu casa, a visitarte para jugar o a tu fiesta de cumpleaños. Piensa en cosas que puedes hacer para incluirlo en tus actividades.
– No dejes que tus padres se estacionen en sitios reservados para personas con discapacidad.
– Cuando vayas a un restaurant o pases por un centro comercial, fíjate si sería accesible para un amigo con discapacidad. Así podrás determinar si sería un sitio que podrías visitar con tu amigo especial. Si no es accesible, podrías sugerirle respetuosamente al dueño o encargado tomar en consideración colocar rampas o barandas, ampliar los pasillos o colocar señales en Braille…
– Trata a la persona con una discapacidad como te gustaría que te trataran y tendrás un amigo de por vida.
