No importa la edad que tengas, debes participar en actividades de ocio. Una persona mayor con alto sedentarismo puede perder sus facultades mentales, perder la salud física y estar tan aburrido que podría llevar a la depresión. Las cartas, el bingo y la artesanía son algunas de las actividades para la tercera edad. Pero, con un poco de ingenio, puedes adaptar muchas más oportunidades de recreación para que las personas mayores participen.
Jardín sensorial
Según Tim Lynch Associates, los jardines sensoriales son una herramienta para que las personas de la tercera edad, incluyendo a aquéllas con demencia, participen en actividades sociales, mentales y creativas. Instala un jardín sensorial que sea atractivo para los cinco sentidos en un hogar de ancianos, un centro de ancianos comunitario o una casa privada. Crea caminos adaptados para sillas de ruedas que recorran el jardín, no sólo las fronteras exteriores del mismo. Instala bancos cómodos con reposabrazos. Para las personas mayores que siguen siendo capaces de realizar tareas de jardinería, asegúrate de instalar algunos canteros para facilitar el acceso. Para apelar al sentido de la vista, planta flores, árboles y setos de diferentes tamaños, formas y colores. Las plantas que atraen a las mariposas, como algodoncillo lavanda y la melaza, y la instalación de una fuente, también añaden atractivo visual. Cuelga campanas de viento y comederos de aves, para escuchar el canto de los pájaros, y apelar al sentido del oído. Activa el sentido del tacto plantando varias texturas florales, como las hojas aterciopeladas y el follaje del sauce llorón. Planta flores aromáticas, como violetas y hierbas, para activar el sentido del olfato, y vegetales o bayas para la degustación.

Bicicletas reclindas
Las personas mayores pueden realizar ejercicios aeróbicos, montando una bicicleta reclinada fija o móvil. El diseño ergonómico del asiento semi inclinado es cómodo y es ideal para participantes con problemas de espalda. El asiento es también más grande que el de una bicicleta estándar. Este tipo de bicicleta es de bajo impacto, lo que hace que cause daños mínimos a las articulaciones. Las personas mayores pueden leer o ver la televisión mientras usan una bicicleta estacionaria o acompañar a sus nietos en una bicicleta móvil.
Juegos mentales
Elder One Stop destaca la importancia de que las personas mayores jueguen juegos que trabajen los músculos del cerebro. Recomienda varios juegos. «Nombrar esa melodía» implica tocar las canciones de la época en la que los participantes eran niños, adolescentes y adultos jóvenes. Escucha las canciones con un equipo de sonido o instrumento. Sólo toca algunas notas a la vez, y ve si alguien puede adivinar la melodía. Crea rompecabezas utilizando fotografías de los participantes de mayor edad. Agranda las imágenes para que tengan por lo menos ocho por 10 pulgadas (20 por 25 cm) de tamaño y pégalas a un cartón. Corta las piezas del rompecabezas y permite que los participantes las unan nuevamente. Elder One Stop también recomienda organizar tu propia versión del «Precio es correcto». Reúne una amplia gama de artículos encontrados en la casa o el centro. Permite a los participantes adivinar cuánto cuestan. El más cercano gana un premio.
Tai Chi
El tai chi es un antiguo arte marcial chino beneficioso para las personas mayores y otros grupos de edad. Aunque sus movimientos son más lentos que en otras artes marciales, los participantes ganan fuerza, equilibrio y flexibilidad.
